In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, communities often find themselves grappling with the aftermath of devastation. Amidst the chaos, however, there are always those who rise to the occasion, ready to lend a helping hand. One such organization, Fire & Rice, recognized an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the Venice, Florida community. Founded by Paul Schmidgall, Fire & Rice specializes in feeding large quantities of people—a skill that became invaluable when Hurricane Milton struck. As an avid supporter and member of Rotary, Schmidgall, along with many team members, understood the pressing need for support in the aftermath of the storm. They decided to partner with Rotary District 6960 to provide nourishment to those tirelessly working to restore their community. “It is always amazing to have the opportunity to serve and support such a wonderful community,” Schmidgall remarked. “All of these people are incredible. They have rallied around their community and are working together to help each other.” This spirit of collaboration and service is at the heart of what Rotary embodies. Schmidgall reflected on the day’s events, saying, “I love watching when mission statements become actions. In Rotary, we believe in the value of Service Before Self, and nowhere was that more evident than what we witnessed today.” Through their efforts, Fire & Rice successfully cooked and served over 200 hot meals to relief workers and provided food for many displaced by the hurricane. Each meal was not just a plate of food but a gesture of solidarity and compassion—a reminder that in times of crisis, community and support can shine through. In a world that often feels divided, initiatives like this highlight the power of collective action. The teamwork exhibited by both Fire & Rice and Rotary exemplifies the strength of community, especially when faced with adversity. As we reflect on the challenges posed by natural disasters, let us also celebrate the spirit of service that rises in response. Organizations like Fire & Rice are more than just providers of food; they are beacons of hope, demonstrating that together, we can weather any storm. In the coming weeks, we encourage others to find ways to contribute to relief efforts, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading awareness. Let’s continue to support our communities and each other in meaningful ways—because when we serve, we uplift not just those in need, but ourselves as well.
